Many employers today use video surveillance systems to ensure the safety of people or property on their premises, for example, or to protect access to buildings.

These systems often result in the collection of information that can be used to identify a specific or identifiable individual, even though this is sometimes not the intended purpose, thus raising particular problems in terms of the protection of personal data.
